Who are ‘The Legends from the Golden Era of Boxing’
Pinklon 'Pinky' Thomas: With his pink trunks and a relentless left jab, Pinklon won the WBC Heavyweight Championship with a hard fought 12-round battle over ‘Terrible’ Tim Witherspoon on August 31, 1984. Ten months later, he defended his title against ex-champion Mike Weaver, stopping Weaver with a single punch in the eighth round.
Earnie 'The Black Destroyer' Shavers: Known as the 'Black Destroyer', Shavers fought Muhammad Ali at Madison Square Garden on September 29, 1977. The fight made the cover of Sports Illustrated, with ‘ALI'S DESPERATE HOUR’ featuring a photograph of Shavers scoring with an overhand right. Ali later said Shavers was the hardest puncher he ever faced, famously stating ‘Earnie hit me so hard, it shook my kinfolk back in Africa.’
James ‘Bonecrusher’ Smith: After scoring nine straight knockouts, Bonecrusher traveled to the UK in 1984 to fight a world title eliminator against the hard hitting undefeated British prospect Frank Bruno, who was 21–0 (21 KOs). Smith later went on to win the WBA Heavyweight title from ‘Terrible’ Tim Witherspoon.
‘Terrible’ Tim Witherspoon: At different points over the course of the 1980s, ‘Terrible’ Tim Witherspoon held the WBC, NABF, and WBA Heavyweight champion titles.
Mike 'Hercules' Weaver: With his credibility established after taking then World Heavyweight champion Larry Holmes into the twelfth round before losing via TKO, former marine Mike Weaver went on to win the WBA Heavyweight title from John Tate, holding the title from March 1980 – December 1982.
